Community members are helping to raise thousands of dollars for a Mount Barker family with a child suffering from Muscular Dystrophy.

In May 2024, 7-year-old Jackson was diagnosed with a rare and degenerative form of the condition called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) after some routine tests were conducted for an unrelated matter.

This diagnosis came as a complete shock to his mum, Megan, and the rest of his family who soon came to realise the devastating life impact this would have on Jackson and their entire family.

“At this stage there is no cure, it is life limiting and greatly life impacting, so Jackon is currently seven, about to turn eight… we will watch him degenerate over this time from being quite an active seven-year-old into… moving him permanently into a powerchair and having adaptations done to our house and we also need to buy a new car,” Megan told ARN’s Josh Nelson.

Friend Hannah has set up a gofundme.com fundraiser page to help the family afford the equipment they need so that Jackson can get around.

“So that he can have the freedom to be a part of the world (be it limited in a power chair), we’ll still have the ability to go to all the places that he loves and will also very importantly be able to transport him to the Women’s and Children’s to the amazing team that are supporting him throughout his diagnosis,” Megan told ARN’s Josh Nelson.

“We really, really appreciate it and we appreciate the support of everybody that’s gotten behind little Jack so that we can concentrate on giving him as much quality of life as we can while we’ve got him with us.”
