An 1864 Langhorne Creek homestead which has been transformed into a popular wedding and events venue is on the market after a decade of restoration.

Woodburn Homestead at 410 Angas Plains Road was bought by Cindy Westphalen in 2016 in what her family has described as a run-down and neglected state.

The property was restored over several years, with its first wedding held in April 2017. It has since become a destination wedding venue hosting around 40 weddings each year.

Bianca Westphalen, Cindy’s daughter-in-law and Woodburn Homestead’s marketing and events co-ordinator, said the property had been transformed from a site overgrown with weeds into the established venue it is today.

“There were no lush lawns then, it was full of weeds and it was like it had been abandoned,” she told realestate.com.

“It’s taken years of restoration and preserving the history of it and really just nurturing what was there to bring it up to what it is today.”

The 42-acre property dates back to 1864 and includes the four-bedroom limestone homestead, established gardens, accommodation, an open-air stone chapel, converted stables, commercial kitchen and event facilities. It also has frontage to the Angas River and a large Moreton Bay fig tree.

The property listing describes the homestead as the heart of Woodburn, with three renovated bathrooms, a country kitchen, belvedere and restored staircase leading to a secret cellar.

The former stables have been converted into a bar and lounge, while the stone chapel has been restored as a ceremony space. Two cottages provide additional accommodation.

Bianca said the property could continue operating as a wedding venue under new ownership, but also offered the opportunity to become a private lifestyle property.

“Ideally we’d like to see it thrive as a wedding venue and see that legacy continue because we’ve poured our heart and soul into it and we’re very proud of it,” she told realestate.com.

“But we’re also excited just to see what the next custodians do with it.”

The property is being offered for sale by negotiation through Harcourts Adelaide Hills, with agents Harry Shorland and Belle Ker handling the sale. The price is listed as contact agent.
