Paid parking could eventually be introduced in Hahndorf, as the Mount Barker District Council unveils a long-term plan to tackle traffic and parking problems.

The plan proposes a three-hour limit along Main Street, a new off-street carpark and restrictions to stop parking spilling into residential streets.

The Council highlighted that paid parking isn’t part of the immediate changes and would only be considered after the new system is reviewed.

The Hahndorf Business and Tourism Association says the move would be unpopular, with almost 70% of traders it surveyed opposing paid parking.

It’s estimated that the town attracts more than 1.2 million visitors a year, with about 3,000 cars and small trucks using the main street every day.
