An Adelaide Hills community impacted by bushfires now has improved mobile coverage, with a new base station switched on at Cudlee Creek this week.

Delivered by Telstra and the federal government under the Mobile Black Spot Program, the infrastructure expands 4G and 5G coverage to more than 100 premises across roughly 30 square kilometres.

The upgrade follows strong local advocacy after the 2019 bushfires, which destroyed more than 70 homes and highlighted gaps in communications during emergencies.

Minister for Communications Anika Wells says improved coverage is critical.

“Better mobile coverage isn’t just about making a call – it’s about keeping families safe and connected when they need it most,” Minister Wells said.

Telstra’s regional general manager for South Australia Michael Patterson says the site will also strengthen emergency response.

“This new site not only helps reduce mobile black spots in this area, it will also improve capacity and provide additional triple zero connectivity… in times of emergency,” Patterson said.
