Draft designs have been released of the up-and-coming city centre in Mount Barker.

The major project will transform the long-vacant site between Hutchinson Street, Morphett Street, Stephen Street and Druids Avenue into a new civic and commercial hub. Plans include a mix of retail and dining, office space, a civic and co-working hub, parking and future accommodation.

The development is a partnership between Mount Barker District Council and Burke Urban Investments, combining public and private investment to reshape the town centre.

Newly released images show the style and scale of the buildings that will frame the precinct, following an earlier preview of the town square itself. The square, spanning around 2,000 square metres, will be delivered first, designed as a flexible space for events, markets and everyday community use.

Design work is continuing, with Burke Urban Investments expected to lodge a development application for the site shortly as plans are refined.

Bulk earthworks are due to begin soon, with major construction anticipated to start later this year and the first stage of the project targeted for completion in early 2027.
