More than 7,400 National Disability Insurance Scheme participants across the Murray Mallee, Fleurieu and Hills will be re-assessed for their places within the program, under sweeping changes proposed yesterday.

The Federal program would introduce new guidelines for eligibility, as well as increase registration thresholds for providers, in a bid to reduce numbers within the scheme to slow cost blowouts and eliminate fraud from the sector.

Other measures include changing payment methods and reducing the amount of funding for social and community participation.

Federal Health Minister Mark Butler says they aim to reduce the nationwide figure by approximately 160,000 by 2030.

More than 4,700 participants live in either the Fleurieu, KI or Hills regions, with another 2,700 in the Murray Mallee.
