RJ Mitte, the actor who portrayed Walter “Flynn” White Jr. across all five seasons of the acclaimed AMC series Breaking Bad and a prominent disability rights advocate, died on October 12, 2026, in Brownsville, Texas. He was 34.
His representatives confirmed the news in a statement: “It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of beloved actor, philanthropist and passionate disability rights advocate R.J. Mitte.” They noted that he “brought authenticity to the role and built a platform on disability awareness and inclusion,” featuring his work as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s, as well as president of the Mitte Foundation.

His representatives or family have not officially disclosed a cause of death. The family has requested privacy.

Born Roy Frank Mitte III on August 21st, 1992, in Jackson, Mississippi, he was adopted shortly after birth by Roy Frank Mitte Jr. and Dyna Mitte. Complications at birth led to brain damage, and he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at age three. He used leg braces and crutches for much of his childhood but strengthened his body through sports, therapy, and exercise, eventually no longer needing walking aids as a teenager.

After his parents separated, his mother raised him primarily. When she was partially paralysed following a car accident, young RJ took on significant family responsibilities, including helping care for his younger sister, Lacianne Carriere, and later becoming a primary financial supporter. The family moved to Los Angeles in 2006 in part to support his sister’s early opportunities in the industry.
Mitte began acting as a teenager, initially as an extra (including an uncredited appearance on Hannah Montana). He broke through on Breaking Bad (2008-2013), where he played the son of Bryan Cranston’s Walter White and Anna Gunn’s Skyler White in 56 episodes. Like the character (based in part on a college friend of series creator Vince Gilligan), Mitte lived with cerebral palsy.

He drew on his own experience to portray a typical teenager navigating family life amid his father’s dark transformation. The cast, including Mitte, earned a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. In recent interviews, including on the Joe Vulpis Podcast just days before his death, he reflected on the role’s emotional weight and the caring set environment.
Beyond Breaking Bad, Mitte appeared in series such as Switched at Birth and Netflix’s The Guardians of Justice, as well as films including The Oak Room, The Recall, and the recent Talking to Strangers, which he had been promoting. He used his visibility to advocate for greater disability representation in Hollywood, pushing against stereotypes and for more authentic roles.

In his personal life, Mitte was engaged to longtime partner Kennedy Suarez. The two had been friends for roughly a decade before their relationship turned romantic around 2018-2020. He proposed on October 10, 2025 (her 30th birthday) at a benefit gala supporting United Cerebral Palsy. They lived together in Brownsville, Texas, a community with ties to his family’s philanthropic work through the Mitte Foundation. Survivors include his mother, sister, grandmother, and fiancée.
Fans and colleagues have expressed shock and sadness online, remembering Mitte’s talent as Walt Jr. and the impact of his advocacy. His death comes as Breaking Bad continues to be celebrated as one of television’s greatest achievements.

Mitte’s life illustrated strength, both personal and in authentic representation. His work on and off screen challenged assumptions about disability while bringing humanity and heart to one of modern television’s most memorable supporting characters.
