The Social Network Part 2 In the Works

“Somehow, Mark Zuckerberg returned.”

Yep, you read that right. A sequel for the 2010 Oscar winning film The Social Network is in the works. The Social Network was the depiction/adaptation of events on the creation of the mass social media network known as Facebook (formally known as “The Facebook”). The film centred primarily on the relationship between Mark Zuckerberg, as played by Jesse Eisenberg, and Eduardo Saverin, as played by Andrew Garfield, and their falling out after the company found success.

The film is set to see legendary screen writer Aaron Sorkin return to write the sequel, he’ll also be replacing David Fincher in the directors chair. Sorkin has said for a few years now he’s been playing with the idea of a sequel to the original film. Sorkin has based his new film on the Wall Street Journal’s “The Facebook Files”, a series of publications that shine a harsh light on some of the inner workings around Facebook.

Whilst on The Town Podcast last year Sorkin revealed he had started working on the sequel and that it centred around the companies more recent history. When asked what he meant specifically Sorkin went so far as to say “I blame Facebook for January 6” referring to the 2021, January 6 riots when MAGA fans stormed the U.S Capitol after the election saw Biden become president. He gave no answer as to why he blamed Facebook for this riot but instead said “You’re going to need to buy a movie ticket” so it’s safe to say he’ll be depicting the riot in the upcoming sequel. Sorkin further stated “Facebook has been, among other things, tuning its algorithm to promote the most divisive material possible. Because that is what will increase engagement. That is what will get you to — what they call inside the hallways of Facebook — ‘the infinite scroll’ … There’s supposed to be a constant tension at Facebook between growth and integrity. There isn’t. It’s just growth.”
