Raised in Oahu, Hawaii, Ramsey has been swimming with sharks since age 14. She developed a technique called “redirecting” to safely deter sharks during close encounters. To master this, she practiced with horses and stingrays, animals sensitive to energy and body language. Ramsey emphasizes that her videos are educational, aiming to teach emergency response techniques rather than encourage imitation.

Advocacy Amidst Controversy

Ramsey’s methods have sparked both admiration and criticism. While some applaud her efforts to humanize sharks, others argue that her close interactions may be dangerous and promote risky behavior. Despite this, she continues to advocate for shark conservation, highlighting that approximately 100 million sharks are killed by humans annually, compared to fewer than ten human fatalities from shark attacks each year.

A Visual and Ethical Exploration

Directed by James Reed, J.P. Stiles, and Harrison Macks, Shark Whisperer delves into the complexities of modern conservation, exploring the intersection of science, activism, and media influence. The film features insights from marine biologists, indigenous knowledge holders, and fellow conservationists, offering a multifaceted view of the challenges facing marine ecosystems today.
