Queenslander Verrity Wandel had hung her sheets to dry on Thursday, but she wasn’t home when unexpected rain began to fall and fully expected to find her sheets drenched upon returning.
When she finally managed to get home, she was astonished to find them neatly folded and placed by her door.
Initially, she assumed that her husband had brought them in, but he denied being the one to rescue the sheets.
So curiously, the couple checked their home’s CCTV and was surprised to see local postman Gurpreet Singh carefully folding the sheets and leaving them safely by her door.
Ms. Wandel couldn’t resist sharing the thoughtful gesture on social media, where the story quickly went viral. “This is one in a million,” she wrote, praising the Australia Post employee’s kind act.
When appearing on Sunrise on Tuesday, Wandel reflected on the heartwarming incident. “It’s something that probably would’ve happened in my parents’ era or back in a small community but it’s not something you would expect today,” she said.
For Singh, the praise was humbling. While admitting this was the first time he had rescued a customer’s washing, he explained that lending a hand is part of his nature.
“I like helping, like just sliding a customer’s parcels inside their premises or under the doorway because we are not allowed to go inside,” he said.
“(I like) to help them out by taking the parcel upstairs for them, that sort of thing.”
The two met this week and have already made plans to share a coffee together.
Ms. Wandel’s video has since garnered nearly three million views online, with countless comments applauding Mr. Singh’s thoughtful gesture. Many have even called for Australia Post to reward him with a promotion or raise.
