Grain Producers SA is urging sightseers not to trespass into canola crops for photos, after reports of people jumping fences in the Barossa and near Gawler over the weekend.
The bright yellow fields are also starting to flower around parts of the Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu Peninsula and Murraylands, including Callington, but the organisation says they are working farms, not tourist attractions.
“Photos in front of the fence with the canola crop behind are okay but photos in the crop are not,” Grain Producers SA said.
The group says entering crops can cause damage and create biosecurity risks, including spreading pests, diseases or weed seeds between paddocks. It can also put people in danger around heavy machinery or uneven ground.
“Farmers are already under significant pressure this season with low rainfall and tight margins, and the last thing they need is preventable damage or extra risk caused by people entering their paddocks,” the group said.
Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the spectacle of yellow flowers from the roadside or designated viewing areas.
