The State Government has announced a travel voucher scheme, as they look to support coastal communities affected by the ongoing algal bloom crisis.

“The Coast Is Calling” will deliver 20,000 vouchers via ballot, with $100 experience vouchers available, along with accommodation vouchers for $100, $200 and $500.

Tourists and locals alike can enter the ballot between September 19th and the 22nd, with the travel period beginning September 24th and finishing November 30th.

Premier Peter Malinauskas says the new scheme will get people back into the affected regions again.

“We want to make sure these vouchers are targeted to the regions that have been hit hardest by the algal bloom – spanning from the southern tip of the Eyre Peninsula, down to Kingston SE – as well as Kangaroo Island,” Malinauskas said.

“The message is clear, it is safe to get out and enjoy the world-class experiences, produce, landscapes, and accommodation that we are so lucky as South Australians to have on our doorstep.”

Expressions of interest for tourism operators opens today and runs through until Friday, with the fast turnaround and abrupt announcement prompting criticism from the State Opposition.

Member for Finniss David Basham says it’s a lot to ask of affected businesses.

“Word needs to get around quickly to the affected communities because the business registrations need to be fully completed by 5pm this Friday,” Basham said.

The Opposition has also criticised the criteria surrounding registrations, stating some communities are excluded from taking part and rules around accommodation providers are unclear.
