Mining company Teramin as filed legal proceedings in the Supreme Court against Mining Minister Tom Koutsantonis for rejecting its proposal to revive the old ‘Bird in Hand’ gold mine in the Adelaide Hills in February.
Terramin has spent years working on applications for the revival of the mine near Woodside. The company said the project would take eight years to complete and would create 140 direct jobs, contributing $221 million dollars to the state economy.
The site around prime Hills vineyards was where 17 gold mines operated in the 1880s.
The bid to reactivate the mine was opposed by landholders and vineyard owners who protested the plans based on potential negative impacts to the environment and groundwater.
In an ASX announcement on Wednesday 2 August, the company said it would be “seeking judicial review of the refusal of the Applications and the making of the recommendations to the Governor.”
“Terramin contends, amongst other things, that each decision should be set aside on the basis that the decisions misapprehended the statutory power in the Mining Act 1971 (SA), were legally unreasonable, did not take into account relevant considerations, took into account an irrelevant consideration, and that Terramin was not accorded procedural fairness,” the company said on the ASX.
