Statewide Code Blue Declared

June 6, 2023 3:58 pm in by

The SA State Government has declared a Code Blue for the entire state, beginning at 5pm this afternoon.

Emergency accommodation will be able to be accessed until 9am on Friday morning, with Homeless Connect SA (1800 003 308) on standby to assist those sleeping rough locally.

The decision comes on the back of a severe weather forecast by the Bureau of Meteorology for parts of South Australia, with towns such as Pinnaroo and Lameroo potentially expecting 40-60mm of rain in a six-hour period overnight.

Human Services Minister Nat Cook says its vital that the health of those out on the streets is protected.

“Rain makes it difficult for people sleeping rough to stay dry and when you add wind into the mix, it creates added safety and can pose significant health risks, such as hypothermia,” Ms Cook said.

“Rough weather in recent weeks has promoted several Code Blues already. These responses help people experiencing homelessness who are most affected by extreme winter weather to remain warm and safe.”
