NETBALL SA COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
It was a hugely successful Netball Country Championships over the long weekend for the Great Southern Netball Association, as they took home two titles and made three grand finals.
The seniors lost just one match on their way to a 33-21 win in their A grade final against Kowree-Naracoorte-Tatiara, while the Under 15’s went undefeated to romp home in Division One.
The Under 17’s made their A grade grand final as well, however lost to the Hills Netball Association 30-22.
RIVER MURRAY VS HILLS INTERLEAGUE
The River Murray Football League has ended a 26-year drought in interleague, after beating the Division One Hills Footy League at the Summit Sports and Recreation Park.
A five goal to one second quarter proved the difference, as the River Murray held on to win by 21 points (14.8 92 to 11.5 71) to beat the Hills for the first time since 1997.
Tailem Bend’s Aidan Coakley was named best afield for his pivotal role in the win.
It was a tough day for the Hills seniors sides, with the Country Division losing by 75 to the Riverland (14.14 98 to 3.5 23), however both the Under 18’s (8.9 57 to 5.13 43) and Under 16’s (4.3 27 to 3.8 26) both won their clashes with the River Murray.
GREAT SOUTHERN VS SOUTHERN INTERLEAGUE
The Great Southern Footy League has held onto bragging rights in the seniors over their Southern counterparts, with both the mens and womens winning in interleague action at Strathalbyn.
The men surged from behind at quarter time to lead by 19 at the main change, holding on throughout to win by 17 (13.14 92 to 10.15 75), while the women dominated to win by 45 (7.6 48 to 0.3.3), keeping the Southern women goalless.
Willunga’s Danny Juckers was named best afield for the men, while Yankalilla’s Georgia Weatherspoon claimed the womens’ best on ground.
The juniors didn’t get the same results, with the Great Southern Under 15 boys and the Under 17 girls and boys all losing their contests.
