An Adelaide Hills adventure-seeker is gearing up to attempt an epic physical and mental challenge this spring.

Katie Sarah, 54, is the only woman in the world to have climbed the seven highest mountains and volcanoes on all seven continents.

The mother of three young adults is set to compete in a new challenge at a different altitude; competing in the Ocean Globe Race, an amateur sailing competition with 15 teams travelling from Southampton in the United Kingdom in a 43,450km sprint in a boat with no computers, no GPS and no hi-tech materials.

The team is set to sail in September, taking in the Southern Ocean and the three great capes, Africa’s Cape of Good Hope, Australia’s Cape Leeuwin and South America’s Cape Horn.

The teams will then finish where they started in April 2024.

Katie Sarah has told ARN’s Adam Connelly and Jennie Lenman this morning that she’s thrilled to try something new.

“I love a challenge and I love being outdoors, being in new remote places and seeing what I’m capable of,” Katie Sarah said.

When asked about where in the world she thinks more people should appreciate and experience, she said we should look no further than our own backyard.

“The Adelaide Hills are just amazing … You can have the most amazing outdoor experience connecting with nature… that experience is just so good for every cell in your being,” she said.

“I would not live anywhere else.”
