SA Government Introduces Bill Banning Electoral Donations

June 13, 2024 3:28 pm in by

The SA Government has taken another step towards delivering one of its election promises, after introducing a bill today which would ban electoral donations.

In what has been proclaimed as a ‘world-first’, the Electoral (Accountability and Integrity) Amendment Bill 2024 seeks to prohibit the giving and receiving of electoral donations and gifts to registered political parties, members of Parliament and candidates, with huge penalties to be enforced for breaking the rules.

The State Government says the move is an effort to increase political transparency, while “ending the nexus of money and political power”.
