Round Six Footy Wrap – 20th May

An unpredictable round of local footy saw the ladders tighten up across our regions, as contenders surge and front-runners come back to the pack; catch up on all the action here:

GREAT SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE (full results here)

Langhorne Creek have announced themselves as a top two contender in the Great Southern after Round Six, after beating fellow frontrunners Myponga-Sellicks in a 9-point thriller on Saturday.

In one of the matches of the season so far, the Hawks managed to come out on top in a shootout, despite Mudlarks spearhead Darren Shillabeer kicking 10 goals. 

The other games from the round went as expected, with the favourites in Victor Harbor, McLaren Districts, Encounter Bay and Strathalbyn all winning easily. 

RIVER MURRAY FOOTBALL LEAGUE (full results here)

The Coorong Cats have cemented themselves as premiership favourites in the River Murray Footy League on Saturday, after a 33-point win on the road over Imperial in Round Six action. 

Both sides were locked in an arm wrestle up until three quarter time, before the Cats kicked five goals to two in the last to remain undefeated in 2024.

The other matches from the round produced some memorable results as well, with Mallee Districts winning just their second game since arriving in the River Murray league last year by topping Tailem Bend by 13 points, while Southern Mallee sent a statement with a gritty 9-point win over Jervois. 

HILLS FOOTBALL LEAGUE (Division One results here, Country Division results here)

The reigning premiers in Division One of the Hills Footy League are back in business for season 2024, as Nairne Bremer tallied an 11-point win over Mount Barker on Saturday in Round Six play. 

The Rams now jump into third after winning their third straight, further compounding a logjam on the table where 2nd and 7th are separated by just one game. 

Other matches in Division One saw Hahndorf extend their lead at the top of the table with a thumping 76-point win over Lobethal, while Onkaparinga Valley moved into second with a 37-point win over Echunga.

In the Country Division, Meadows’ short time on top has finished after they lost by 17 points to Birdwood, while Gumeracha held off Kangarilla and Kersbrook beat Torrens Valley.
