Round Eight Footy Wrap – 3rd June

A fallen powerhouse in the Great Southern stunned on Saturday, while league leaders across our regions furthered flexed their muscles ahead of the break. Catch up on all the action here:

GREAT SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE (full results here)

Willunga has produced a staggering performance on Saturday to finally produce its first win of the Great Southern Footy League season, smashing Mount Compass by 106 points.

The Demons celebrated their 150th season in style, belting the Bulldogs from the first bounce to break their winless run of seven games to start 2024.

The match of the round came between two of the league’s best, with Victor Harbor withstanding a firm challenge from Langhorne Creek to win by 34 points in a shootout. 

The Great Southern’s other matches saw Strathalbyn edge past Yankalilla, McLaren Districts easily account for Encounter Bay and Myponga-Sellicks smash Goolwa/Port Elliot.

RIVER MURRAY FOOTBALL LEAGUE (full results here)

The Coorong Cats are heading into the bye undefeated, after surging past Jervois to win by 53 points in Round Eight action on Saturday in the River Murray Footy League.

The Bluds got the jump on the visitors and led by 14 points at quarter time, however the Cats drastically shifted momentum after that, kicking 14 goals to 5 in the last three terms to sit 7-0. 

Other matches went as expected across the round, with top four sides in Mypolonga, Imperial and Southern Mallee all comfortably beating their lower-table opponents.

HILLS FOOTBALL LEAGUE (Division One results here, Country Division results here)

Onkaparinga Valley have now dropped out of the five in Division One of the Hills Footy League, after Mount Lofty cruised past them for a 40-point win on Saturday as part of Round Eight action. 

The Demons now sit in third following the win, while the Dogs now sit behind Uraidla Districts in fifth, who moved up despite losing to Nairne-Bremer by 11.

Other results saw Lobethal beat Echunga by 21 and Blackwood also provided the upset of the season, falling 12 points short of beating the undefeated Hahndorf.

In the Country Division, league leaders Gumeracha sent a huge statement to the rest of the league, beating the in-form Kersbrook by 135 points and keeping them to just one goal in the process.
