Temporary accommodation is being supplied to those who are still rebuilding after the Murray River floods, in the form of recovery pods which can sit on their property.

The self-contained shipping containers connect to mains power and have a water tank hooked up, supplying basic amenities such as a small kitchen, a bathroom and up to four beds.

Six have been deployed so far, with 14 additional pods available for those who might need them.

Housing Minister Nick Champion says it’s part of a wider assistance program which requires patience.

“They just free people up from rental accommodation or having to stay with relatives, which can you know, can be a bit costly and time-consuming. It just provides a short-term solution for people to stay on their properties,” Champion said.

“Obviously we all want to rebuild as quickly as possible but often there are just practical and physical constraints about that, so we just gotta stick with the communities affected and try and do our best to help them out.”

“We’ve all got to be realistic about what can be done and just work to a program to get back to normal.”
