More than 17,000 new homes are slated for Murray Bridge, Victor Harbor and Goolwa, as the State Government looks to continue tackling a shortage of houses.

The latest decision follows a change in the Environment and Food Production Areas, with previously protected agricultural land now open for developers after legislation passed parliament yesterday.

A further 43,000 homes have been earmarked for Roseworthy and Two Wells.

Planning Minister Nick Champion says the announcement continues their commitment to housing.

“This reform ensures we will have the land and the infrastructure in place to deliver the homes South Australians will need for generations to come. More homes mean more jobs, stronger communities and a more inclusive economy,” Champion said.

The move has drawn criticism from the State Opposition, as well as agricultural bodies such as Grain Producers SA, with CEO Brad Perry calling the decision short-sighted and harmful to the future of agriculture in South Australia.
