New data from the Regional Australia Institute has shown millennials are flocking to regional areas.
Local government areas such as Mount Barker (20.5%), Kangaroo Island (12.2%) and Victor Harbor (6.3%) showed significant growth in millennial migration rates, along with positive growth from the Alexandrina (5.2%) and Yankalilla (4.5%).
More than fifty-seven thousand millennials left capital cities for the regions between 2016 and 2021.
RAI CEO Liz Ritchie says it’s a sharp turn against conventional wisdom.
“For so many years we’ve heard stories about young people from regional communities leaving the country to undergo further study and take up jobs in the cities, never to return. But today we can debunk that myth,” Ms Ritchie said.
“Their desire to live in regional Australia can partly be attributed to the strong jobs market in country areas, as well as the enviable lifestyle benefits – like the reduced cost of living, and more space.”
