Mawson House Cafe in Meadows has closed permanently, ending a five-year chapter for the family-run business earlier than planned.
Owners Jacob and Matilda Brumby confirmed the closure in a social media post over the weekend, saying the cafe would not reopen after the Christmas break due to “incredibly tough and unforeseen challenges”.
The couple had previously announced the cafe would trade until Mother’s Day this year after their lease expired, but said reopening for just a few remaining months was no longer viable.
“With one month of our planned five-month closure already gone, it’s simply no longer viable for us to open our doors again,” they said.
Located opposite Meadows Primary School, Mawson House Cafe had become a popular meeting place for local families and the wider community.
The Brumbys said the sudden closure meant missing out on a proper farewell.
“We are absolutely heartbroken. Heartbroken that we don’t get our final months, that there will be no last coffees poured, no final chaotic rushes, no chance to say goodbye in person,” they said.
“This cafe was more than a business. It was a dream built in the town I grew up in, surrounded by people we love.”
The closure has prompted an outpouring of support online, with customers describing the cafe as a warm and welcoming space and thanking the owners for their contribution to the community.
“To everyone who supported us over the last four and a half years — thank you,” the Brumbys said.
“This isn’t the ending we imagined, but we are so proud of what we created and so thankful for every person who was part of it.”
Mawson House Cafe first opened in 2021 and had traded in Meadows for more than four years before closing its doors for the final time.
