A milestone for the construction of the new Thomas Foods International (TFI) abattoir in the Murraylands with the first stage of development now completed.

The highly anticipated facility has been rebuilt five years after the company’s previous Murray Bridge meat packing facility burned to the ground, in January 2018.

The first stage of development has taken 2.5 years to build and includes animal handling and beef processing and boning  facilities, stockyards, employee and admin amenities, a wastewater treatment plant and automated systems for chilling, freezing and storing produce.

Ahead of an upcoming offical opening, the company has launched a recruitment drive for 350 workers, including maintenance fitters and electricians and those who can work in beef processing and packaging.

Production at the facility, 10km outside of Murray Bridge’s town centre, is expected to eventually ramp up to 600 head of cattle per day.

Future stages of the development will include sheep and lamb processing and an expansion of the beef facilities.
