New funds announced for the South Eastern Freeway will help to improve traffic management during emergencies and incidents.

The Federal Government’s $100M pledge for safety upgrades has been matched by the State Government.

An Intelligent Transport System will be installed for improved lane management and median barrier gates will be built so that traffic can easily be redirected during incidents.

With work on the Heysen Tunnels underway, the Managed Motorway System is also being extended to help improve travel time reliability and incident response.

The intersection at the bottom of the Freeway is also set to be re-configured, following a series of serious crashes.

The news follows last Wednesday’s crash at the Cross Road intersection, when an out-of-control truck ploughed into a wall near the fountain.

Transport Minister Tom Koutsantonis said in a press conference that design works should be completed by December.

In seperate Freeway projects also funded by the Government, the Mount Barker interchange will be expanded to three-lanes both north and southbound, and the Verdun interchange is duplicating, enabling access in all directions.
