Disaster Relief Australia will be hard at work throughout Mannum and the Riverland for the next month, as they look to assist locals with flood recovery.
The DRA is in the region at the request of the SA Government and Green Industries SA, and will look to use their team of 20 to speed up clean-up efforts.
The veteran-led national body have named their local operation after Sapper Roy Camilleri, who was the focus of commemorations yesterday at the Mannum Sports Ground.
Born and raised in Mannum, Sapper Camilleri joined the Royal Engineers in the 2/13 Australian Field
Company, 9th Division in 1943. He served on active duty in the South Pacific, including Borneo,
Rabaul, and Papua New Guinea. He also fought with the RATS of Tobruk. He was discharged in 1946.
Sapper Camilleri’s medals include The War Medal 1939-1945, 1939-1945 Star, Australian Service
Medal 1945-1975, Australian Service Medal 1939-1945, and the Pacific Star.
DRA Chief Executive Geoff Evans says it’s an honour to be helping the region.
“It is our privilege to be in the Riverland and Murraylands, to assist the community with its flood recovery,” Mr Evans said.
“It is also an honour to meet the family of Sapper Camilleri and remember him and his contribution to Australia.”
