Illegal dumping of asbestos waste in the Murraylands and Adelaide Hills has cost an Adelaide demolition company and its owner more than $700,000 dollars in fines and cleanup costs.
The breaches occurred in Houghton and Sedan, with thousands of tonnes of construction and demolition waste contaminated with asbestos were found dumped at the sites in 2017.
Port Adelaide Salvage and Maurice Cosaro have pleaded guilty to 14 offences, including operating without a licence and assaulting an EPA officer.
The EPA says these offences show blatant disregard for environmental laws despite past penalties.
“Senior Judge Durrant has sent a strong message in his sentencing that this type of environmental offending is serious and that assaulting and failing to comply with a direction of an authorised officer and a clean-up order will not be tolerated.”
