Community cricket is set to return to Mount Barker’s Summit Sport and Recreation Park for the 2025/26 season, after cost pressures forced the association to abandon the venue last summer.
The Alexandra & Eastern Hills Cricket Association confirmed the move on Saturday, announcing that junior and senior matches will once again be played at the $23 million facility after a new agreement was reached with Mount Barker District Council and the South Australian Cricket Association.
“We are thrilled to see cricket back at the Summit,” the Association said on social media.
“It’s not just about the players – it’s about giving our juniors, families, and the broader community the chance to experience cricket at a premium facility. This venue is a showcase for regional sport and highlights what can be achieved when Mount Barker District Council and cricket associations work together.”
The venue offers a unique experience for players and families, with matches including the popular U16, Division 2 and Division 1 T20 competitions to be staged under lights.
Mount Barker District Council has also positively responded to the news today.
“We’re thrilled that cricket is coming back to the Summit Sport and Recreation Park and can’t wait to see players, families and supporters enjoying cricket at this fantastic venue,” a spokesperson for the Mount Barker District Council said this afternoon.
The announcement follows a challenging period for the ground, which has faced high operating costs and a lack of tenants since opening in 2021. Cricket’s return is being seen as a breakthrough that could help draw more activity and community use to the AFL-standard venue.
The Association says clubs have been contacted about scheduling, with strong participation expected across Saturday junior and senior grades, Friday night juniors, and Sunday fixtures.
