An Adelaide Hills doctor has successfully campaigned to get the speed limit reduced in his hometown of Crafers from 80km/h to 60km/h following a horror crash earlier this year.
A kilometre stretch of Mount Lofty Summit Road near the main township towards Mawson Drive will be reduced by 20 kilometres per hour in late October 2023.
Dr Kris Kandasamy has been advocating for the safety measure since last year and renewed his campaign after he and his partner came across a serious collision between a motorbike and a car at the intersection of Pottery Drive and Mt Lofty Summit Road on the evening of March 13.
“Traffic was all stopped, there were emergency vehicles there, a blue tarpaulin up, held by the emergency services people, a man was screaming. A motorbike had run into a car turning off from Pottery Drive and that Sunday night I thought ‘enough is enough’,” he said.
He wrote to local Member Josh Teague and Premier Peter Malinaukas and stated that “as a medical practitioner”, the Government should consider that doctors and emergency services workers do “not need more workload” from “preventable incidents like this”.
Four months later heard back with news DPTI would reduce the limit in October 2023.
Dr Kandasamy tells us he is happy with the result and grateful for the assistance of fellow residents and Josh Teague MP.
“It is a bit of a relief, the community is more relieved than I am. There’ve been people who’ve been quite literally scared to go out on that road because of close misses in the past,” he said.
