There were no injuries reported by passengers or crew, and all were safely evacuated, completing their journey to Port Elliot and Goolwa by road coach.

The SteamRanger Heritage Railway team say a formal investigation into the cause of the derailment is currently underway.

“SteamRanger appreciates the concern from locals and tourists, however, asks that interested parties avoid accessing the derailment site while vehicle recovery and track repairs are undertaken,” a statement from SteamRanger reads.

“Updates regarding the operation of the historic Cockle Train while recovery is undertaken will be provided via the SteamRanger website or via the SteamRanger social media channels.”
