Fishing is more than a pastime for Murray Bridge local Brian Pilmore – it is a way to find calm, focus and connection.

Living with disability, Brian says time spent by the River Murray helps him slow things down and regain balance, not just on the water but in everyday life. That personal experience has now grown into a community event, with the Brian Pilmore Classic fishing contest returning for a second year in early February.

The free-entry event was first held in 2025, after Brian worked with Genuine Support Services Australia to turn a simple idea into a day built around inclusion, friendship and enjoyment rather than pressure or competition. Organisers say the inaugural event exceeded expectations, attracting a broad mix of participants and strong local support.

Brian says fishing offers a sense of stillness and purpose that he wanted to share with others. He hopes the event continues to provide a welcoming space for people of all abilities to come together by the river.

The 2026 Brian Pilmore Classic will be held on Tuesday the 3rd of February, starting at 10.30am at Sturt Reserve, at the shelter shed next to the Murray Bridge Club. With support from local businesses and sponsors, including BCF Murray Bridge and Farm Fresh Markets, a range of prizes will be on offer, including the grand prize trophy.

Last year’s winner, Murray Bridge local Kevin Box, is expected to return to defend his title.

Registrations are now open through Genuine Support Services Australia. Anyone interested in taking part can contact the GSSA office on 8116 7577.
