The planned closure of the People’s Choice Bank branch (now re-branded to People’s First Bank) in Blackwood has sparked concern among local residents, with a petition calling on the customer-owned bank to reconsider.
The branch is one of 15 set to close permanently from 4pm on Thursday 12th of March, following the 2023 merger that created People First Bank.
Other regional closures include Victor Harbor and Gawler last year.
Local member for Waite Catherine Hutchesson says the branch is a vital service for the community.
“The People’s Choice branch in Blackwood is more than just a bank, it’s a vital local service that many residents rely on every day,” Hutchesson said.
“From people who prefer face-to-face banking, to local businesses and families who value personal service, this branch keeps our community connected and supported. I’m encouraging everyone who cares about local banking to sign the petition and make their voice heard.”
The petition highlights that many residents, particularly older people, rely on in-person banking and may not feel confident using online services or travelling to nearby branches.
People First Bank says the closures reflect changing customer behaviour, with fewer than 1% of transactions now taking place in branches.
Customers will still have access to digital services, contact centres, Australia Post banking and other nearby branches, and affected staff will be offered alternative roles.
