Angle Grinder Suspected Cause of Point Sturt Fire

An angle grinder is believed to be the cause of a grass fire yesterday near Clayton Bay, which posed a threat to the community and caused damage to three structures.

The impacted structures at Point Sturt include a caravan, shed with solar batteries inside and overhead awning with solar panels.

Yesterday, a Watch and Act message was issued by the Country Fire Service (CFS) at 2.40pm.

Approximately 35 firefighters from 9 CFS crews, supported by 6 aircraft, were called to the region and managed to get the fire under control, saving nearby houses.

Crews are remained on scene into the evening to extinguish the blaze and mop up the property.

There have been no reported injuries from the incident.

The damage bill is estimated at around $50,000.

With most of the state now in fire danger season CFS reminds the community to remain vigilant when using power tools throughout the season.
