Graham Mason SA1 Hot Rod Returns to the Bridge

(The Winged Warrior is back, yes that’s right)

After 38 years, the Graham Mason SA1 Hot Rod returns back to the bridge, after being restored to as close as he raced it back in 1987.

Speedway has been a big iconic part of Murray Bridge for years, people would come in droves to see there favourite drivers and let’s not forget the driver would come from far and wide to race the pride and joy.

We can’t forget the commentators with iconic sayings like “ get your back side track side “

And “ let’s get ready to rumble “

While you eat your hot donuts. The iconic bridge motors seen on the side of the Graham mason iconic SA1 hot rod was just a reminder how big racing was in Murray Bridge in the 80’s and 90’s till today.

But we can’t forget what this chassis has gone through over its many years of life,

Built by Zeke Agars  as a sprint car and was sold to Brian Cowling and turned into a Stockrod, then changed hands and Graham Mason ended up purchasing it and ran it as a Hot Rod for two seasons as SA1, it was sold to Ross Wright and the top chassis rails were cut to allow for the Ford engine to fit in, it was then sold to lan Wolfenden, he run it in SA then moving to Alice Springs and run it there. It was then sold to Lyd Polgoze and turned into a Modified Rod and run as AS12 with a 253 V8. It finally made its way back to SA and was purchased and restored by Allan Balshaw Jr in 2022 and with the great help from Brian from Smithfield Mechanical and Allan’s younger brother Michael it was turned back to the Graham Mason SA1 Hot Rod that you’ll see today but still runs the Holden 253 for now.

(What a journey hey)

To all Graham Mason family friends mechanics and fans his Hot Rod will be doing a spirited demonstration, so be sure to make it to the Murray Bridge Speedway February 22, 2025.
