100th Anniversary – Murray Bridge Rail Bridge

The Rural City of Murray Bridge invites you to celebrate a remarkable milestone – the 100th anniversary of the Murray Bridge Rail Bridge, to be held on Thursday 13 November 2025.

Over the decades, Murray Bridge’s crossings have played a vital role in connecting South Australia – supporting both rail and road travel and establishing our town as a regional hub.

Originally known as Edwards Crossing, the site became a defining landmark with the completion of the first bridge over the Murray River in 1878, a moment that shaped Murray Bridge’s identity and strengthened its connection to the eastern states. In 1925 the construction of the rail bridge reflected the region’s growing freight demands and its centenary now stands as a testament to a hundred years of connection between communities across South Australia and beyond.

Council is planning a community celebration at the Murray Bridge RSL – the perfect vantage point to admire the bridge and city skyline. The program will feature displays of historical memorabilia, guest speakers and the opportunity to reflect on the past 100 years and the bridge’s enduring contribution to our township and South Australia’s transport network.
