Two men have died in separate crashes near Langhorne Creek and Elwomple during a devastating morning on South Australian roads which pushed the state’s road toll to 50.
Emergency services were called to Langhorne Creek Road just before 8.45am yesterday, Wednesday 10 June, after reports a BMW motorcycle had crashed into a building at a winery before catching fire.
The rider – a 43-year-old man from Nangkita – died at the scene.
Major Crash investigators attended the crash site, with Langhorne Creek Road closed between Lee Road and Lake Plains Road for several hours.
Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage from the area around the time of the crash to contact Crime Stoppers and quote incident number 152185.
Less than an hour later, another fatal crash unfolded at Elwomple, south of Tailem Bend.
Police say a Hyundai sedan collided head-on with a road train carrying hay on the Dukes Highway just before 9.50am.
Both vehicles caught fire on impact.
The driver of the sedan – a man from Paradise – died at the scene, while the truck driver escaped without injury.
CFS crews remained at the scene for hours battling the blaze, with sections of the Dukes Highway expected to remain closed into the night between the Mallee Highway and Tynan Road.
Major Crash investigators are also seeking witnesses or dashcam footage relating to the Elwomple crash, quoting incident number 152446.
The two regional deaths came amid a horror day across the state, with a third fatal crash also occurring at Modbury Heights on Wednesday morning.
Police say a 23-year-old woman died after being struck by a rubbish truck on Melrose Street. The truck driver was reported for careless driving causing death.
South Australia’s road toll now stands at 50 lives lost this year.
