There is something inherently mesmerising about seeing your own backyard from 30,000 feet, even if that backyard is rendered in billions of pixels. Microsoft Flight Simulator has officially released World Update 21: Australia, and while the technical upgrades are impressive, it is the unexpected partnership at the heart of this launch that truly commands attention.

Microsoft has teamed up with the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) to launch this latest update. Stepping into the RFS hangar in Bankstown, Sydney, one is quickly reminded that while we fly for leisure, nearly 70,000 volunteers across New South Wales engage with aviation as a matter of life and death. To mark the occasion, the simulator has introduced a mission that moves beyond simple sightseeing, you’ll actually be water bombing.

More Than Just a Scenic Tour

The highlight of the 2024 edition’s integration is an exclusive firefighting mission near Coffs Harbour. Tasked with navigating the volatile air currents and visibility issues inherent in bushfire management, players get a digital taste of the daily heroism required by RFS pilots. It is a sobering, immersive experience that bridges the gap between gaming and the operational realities of the world’s largest volunteer fire service.

Jorg Neumann, Head of Microsoft Flight Simulator, noted that Australia was a natural choice for a dedicated update due to its “unique and diverse set of challenges.” It turns out, navigating a Lockheed Hercules over a roaring blaze in the Great Dividing Range is one of them.

Landmarks, Legends, and the “Big” Things

For those who prefer their flights a little less high-stakes, World Update 21 delivers a massive overhaul of the Australian landscape. The update features over 30 hand-crafted Points of Interest (POIs). While the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the urban sprawl of Melbourne look sharper than ever, the developers have leaned into our national obsession with “The Big Things.”

You can now bank your aircraft over The Big Koala, navigate toward The Big Mango, or find your way via The Big Golden Guitar in Tamworth. It is a brilliant nod to Australian road-trip culture, immortalised in high-definition 3D.

For the history buffs, the update introduces the CAC Boomerang. This Australian-designed and manufactured fighter aircraft is a piece of local aviation heritage that feels right at home in the digital hangar. Flying a Boomerang over the vast, red expanse of the Outback is perhaps the most “Aussie” experience you can have without leaving your living room.

Enhancing the Experience

The update isn’t just a fresh coat of paint; it includes:

  • Discovery Flights: Guided tours over the Whitsundays, the Cocos Islands, and Canberra.
  • Precision Challenges: New landing challenges and rally races designed to test your mastery of the flight stick.
  • Visual Fidelity: Meticulously crafted enhancements that make the remote regions of the Northern Territory look as lush and daunting as they do in reality.

Whether you are a seasoned “Simmer” or a newcomer curious about the view from above, World Update 21: Australia offers a compelling reason to take to the skies. It is a celebration of our landscape, but more importantly, a tribute to the resilience of those who protect it.

World Update 21: Australia is available now as a free download for owners of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 and 2020, as well as via Xbox Game Pass.
