A swimmer has been rescued from a dangerous rip at Petrel Cove at Encounter Bay, after bystanders entered the water before emergency crews arrived.

Emergency services were called to the beach near The Bluff on Sunday afternoon following reports a woman was in distress in the surf.

Members of the public reached the swimmer and brought her safely back to shore.

The SA Ambulance Service confirmed two patients were assessed at the scene, a woman in her 50s and a man who entered the water to assist.

One of the patients was taken to South Coast District Hospital for further treatment. The condition of the second person has not been confirmed.

Petrel Cove is an unpatrolled beach known for permanent rip currents and strong surges. The site has been the focus of longstanding safety concerns, including the 2014 drowning of Kamran Gujari, and multiple rescues in recent years.

Authorities continue to urge caution at unpatrolled beaches, particularly along the South Coast.
