The State Government has announced its second ever commissioner for the River Murray, with highly regarded environment and water lawyer Dr Emma Carmody set to take on the position.
Dr Carmody moves into the position after an extensive career in advocating, consulting and advising for organisations such as the Environmental Defenders Office, the Peter Cullen Water and Environment Trust and the Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists, along with helping the State Government through previous negotiations.
She also served for five years as the sole Legal Advisor to the Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention Wetlands.
Her appointment follows Richard Beasley SC’s decision to step down, after he was also integral in renegotiating the previous Basin Plan to provide more opportunities for the State to recover water for environmental gain.
