South Australian shoppers are doing double-takes at supermarket shelves this season, with some strawberry punnets holding only three or four berries.

Growers in the Adelaide Hills say a cold, wet spring has given this year’s summer crop extra time to grow, producing some of the largest strawberries seen in years. A few berries have even tipped the scales at nearly 190 grams.

Despite their size, flavour still comes down to colour rather than weight with growers recommending consumers pick the reddest fruit for the best taste, even if there are fewer berries in the punnet.

Raspberries, blackberries and blueberries are also bigger than usual.

After a slow start to the southern season, growers expect a consistent supply of high-quality berries leading up to Christmas, offering locals a sweet reward for their patience.
