Adelaide Hills Deputy Mayor Nathan Daniell has officially announced he will contest the upcoming mayoral supplementary election, marking his first bid for the council’s top role.

In a statement released yesterday, Cr Daniell said his decade of service on council , including more than six years as Deputy Mayor, had prepared him to take on the position permanently.

Living in Bridgewater with his family and working as a teacher at Heathfield High School, he said his ties with local volunteers, businesses and community groups shaped his priorities for the region.

“Since 2014, I have served our community as an elected member,” he wrote.

“I will continue to provide strategic leadership and work closely with residents to strengthen financial sustainability, protect the Hills’ unique character and support sport, recreation, arts and small business.”

He highlighted achievements during the current council term, including the extension of the Amy Gillett Bikeway, the opening of the Woodside Pool Splash Park, securing $2 million for Cox Creek restoration, launching Fabrik, and ongoing work to strengthen community resilience.

The mayoral supplementary election was triggered by the vacancy created in September when former Mayor Jan-Claire Wisdom resigned following several months of leave. A council investigation found she had breached behavioural standards, bullied staff and misled the organisation over her use of a policy to obtain legal advice, allegations she has consistently denied.

Nominations for the mayoral election closed yesterday, Thursday the 4th of December, with the final list of candidates to be confirmed by the Electoral Commission of South Australia.

Ballot papers will be mailed to voters from the 13th of January 2026, with voting closing at 12pm on the 9th of February 2026.

The Electoral Commissioner manages all supplementary elections to ensure they are conducted fairly and openly. Supplementary votes are held between regular election cycles to ensure councils remain fully represented and able to function effectively.

More information will be available once the full candidate list is released.
