Scientific modelling shows the shoreline at Port Elliot’s Horseshoe Bay could recede by around 12 metres by 2050 and 25 metres by 2100.
That level of erosion could place at risk key community assets including the Port Elliot Bowling Club, Surf Life Saving Club, the Flying Fish Café, carparks, footpaths, toilets and reserve areas.
Alexandrina Council is now asking the community for feedback on how best to respond. Options being considered include sand nourishment, replacing and extending the seawall, or even relocating built assets.
Mayor Keith Parkes said there’s no easy answer, with each option carrying social, environmental and financial trade-offs. Cost estimates range from hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars depending on the approach.
Consultation will open next Thursday the 25th of September and will run through until the 30th of October via Alexandrina Council’s ‘My Say’ website. For details visit mysay.alexandrina.sa.gov.au or our Council Offices.
