Finally more investment in wild rabbit control for the Adelaide Hills and Fleurieu Peninsula, where the pest species has been running rampant.
As part of the State Government’s $73 million Drought Support package, $760,000 is being put towards targeted control measures.
The Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA) is working in partnership with regional landscape boards, the National Rabbit Coordinator, and the Foundation for Rabbit-Free Australia.
Eligible landholders in the Hills and Fleurieu region can now access free rabbit control tools, including free warren ripping and free 1080 oat bait (for properties over five hectares).
Feral rabbits are causing serious headaches for South Australian farmers, with the pests responsible for an estimated $197 million in agricultural losses each year.
Not only do they decimate crops, pastures and native vegetation, their burrowing also leads to soil erosion, land degradation and damage to infrastructure — all of which adds up to reduced productivity on farms.
To help farmers understand the support available and share their experiences with managing feral rabbits, PIRSA and Landscapes Hills and Fleurieu are hosting a series of free regional barbecues this July:
- Parawa – Wednesday 17 July, 6pm
- Strathalbyn – Monday 22 July, 6pm
- Mount Torrens – Tuesday 23 July, 6pm
