Murraylands Welcome Athletes for First TDU Start

200116 Hosking WTDUStage1 1200x500A mild day through the Adelaide Hills saw Chloe Hosking (pictured) take the stage victory on Thursday and will take to the start line in the Santos Ochre Leader’s Jersey today.

South Australian Premier Steven Marshall said daily Santos Best Dressed Town honours were awarded to Echunga Community Association for their outstanding display of colour and decoration.

“Today’s stage will see Murray Bridge hosting a start of the Santos Women’s Tour Down Under for the first time in race history, heading east to cross the Murray River before heading back into town and to the Adelaide Hills via Nairne and Balhannah,” Premier Marshall said.

“Once today’s road racing action is finished, loyal cycling fans and visitors are encouraged to head to the Adelaide SuperDrome to see Australia’s best track cyclists take to the boards in The Advertiser Track Down Under II event.”

Kimberley Conte, Race Director, Santos Women’s Tour Down Under said the real test for riders today will be the road less-travelled – Christmas Tree Ridge at Forreston, a debut climb with a maximum 11% grade that occurs late in the race.

“Murray Bridge has been part of the women’s race in the past but this is the first time it will host the race for us. The race then crosses over the Murray River and back into town under race-neutral before it heads to the Adelaide Hills via Nairne and Balhannah,” Ms Conte said.

“Birdwood will see a sprint and finish in today’s opportunistic race, with the peloton passing through Birdwood with 35 kilometres to go and returning in the other direction on approach to the finish."

On Saturday Nairne once again hosts a stage start, with the decisive stage of this year's tour taking the peloton out to Lobethal before looping back towards the tradtional circuit of Stirling, Heathfield, Mylor and Aldgate for the Stage 3 finish.

Beware there will be speed and parking restrictions over the coming weeks plus road closures.
