A call for the protection of horses from the Australian Veterinary Association.

A National Welfare Standard has been proposed by the body following disturbing reports of the mistreatment of racehorses on ABC's 7.30 Report in October ahead of the 2019 Melbourne Cup.

Dr Sam Nugent, President of AVA's Equine Veterinarians Australia (EVA) Group said “it is paramount that the welfare of all horses, not just a chosen few, undergoes reform. The EVA is concerned that in the wake of the footage, the plight of many horses that are not racehorses has been ignored," Dr Nugent said.

The Association will lobby the Federal Government to implement change for the whole equine population along with better enforcement of welfare standards at abattoirs.
