A new online course is being developed for community service pilots following a fatal crash in Mt Gambier which claimed three lives.

An Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) report out this week on the 2017 tragedy reveals Mount Barker pilot Grant Gilbert took off in conditions for which he was not accredited.

The Angel Flight volunteer was taking 16-year-old Emily Redding and her mother Tracy, to an appointment in Adelaide when its believed the 78-year-old became disoriented in foggy conditions and crashed into a paddock.

Mr Gilbert was qualified to fly in visible conditions but not in instrument meterological conditions (IMC).

While a new online education course is being developed, Angel Flight is providing pilots with a US online course.
