The first Southern Right Whale of the season has been spotted on the South Coast.

An official whale spotter saw the mammal breaching and travelling towards Granite Island on Thursday 13 June around 9.30am. The whale was about 350 metres from shore at Dump Beach.

Ten minutes later, two other whales were seen 100 metres from shore off Chiton Rocks, though their breed could not be identified.

The sightings come after the first Humpback Whale of the season was spotted on 6 May.

Motorised Exclusion Zone Under State Government Consideration

The State Government is currently considering whether to extend the motorised vessel exclusion zone during whale season so it covers the Hindmarsh River Mouth to the Murray River Mouth.

Following community deputation in September 2018, and public consultation in February/March 2019, 7 out of 9 Alexandrina Councillors voted in favor of protecting the Southern Right Whale nursery area during the period 1 May – 31 October each year.
