South Coast Beach Volunteers Needed

There is a call for volunteers to help monitor sand erosion on South Coast beaches.

If you have ever wondered why there are polls in the sand at Victor Harbor, Middleton, Basham Beach and Chiton Rocks, they are there to measure sand levels and help inform coastal management decisions.

Victor Harbor Coastcare's Andrew Leak has been taking measurements at five Victor Harbor poles for 10 years while Terry Tarrant from Port Elliot has been measuring another three poles for 11 years. Measurements used to taken weekly, but are now taken monthly.

The data helps the Department for Environment and Water's Coastal Management Branch (CMB) in their monitoring of a network of over 300 'beach profiles' where beach erosion could become a threat.

Terry and Andrew are ready to pass on their role to new volunteers. Ring Andrew for more information on 0409 551 248.
