Calls For Fleurieu Study Hub

Liberal candidate for Mayo Georgina Downer is calling for a study hub to be setup on the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Ms Downer says young people in the region should be able to remain in their community while undergoing tertiary study, with the hub to provide academic support, study spaces, computer and internet access, video conferencing, admin support and library services.

“The Australian Government’s Regional Study Hubs Program provides financial assistance to community-based organisations enabling them to establish and maintain study hubs in regional areas to support Commonwealth-assisted students doing undergraduate courses.

“I’m keen to work with the Fleurieu community, South Australian universities and the Australian Government to have such a hub located in the region.

“While there are some vocational tertiary options available in the region for students finishing high school, the Fleurieu merits some university options as well. This would reduce the cost burden on families and taxpayers of sending students to university campuses in Adelaide, enabling our young people to stay in their community while undertaking their studies.

There are already hubs set up in Murray Bridge, Nooriutpa and the Upper Spencer Gulf with Federal funding. Ms Downer says with the region continuing to grow, the hub would decrease the financial burden on students and their families having to travel to Adelaide for tertiary education

“The Fleurieu Peninsula is a growing community where demand for locally-based tertiary education will only increase. University education opens so many career opportunities for young people and it’s important that we can offer the chance to undertake these studies in their own communities.”
