The Mayors of the Mt Barker and Adelaide Hills Councils have hit back at SA Government plans to cap rates, saying the move will also cap services.

The move to cap rates, a Liberal Government election promise was introduced in an amendment bill last month, giving the Essential Services Commission the authority to set the maximum level of rate increases that council are allowed each year.

Mayors Anne Ferguson and Bill Spragg say that the cap will restrict council revenue and their ability to meet community expectations on the delivery of services, also accusing the government or eroding council powers.

Mayor Ferguson says residents will need to accept the consequences if the rate cap legislation is passed, saying while the expectation in a growing region such as Mt Barker is to provide more services, this legislation will mkae it harder to do so.
